Sri Lanka has become the third team to qualify for Asia Cup 2022 Super 4 stage, winning their last match of the Group Stage against Bangladesh. They thumbed up by two wickets, although their triumph almost looked impossible at one stage.
Earlier, Afghanistan and India defeated Bangladesh and Hong Kong in their last matches to qualify for the Super 4 round, which now has only one spot left, to be occupied by either Pakistan or Hong Kong. The men in green and men in red will meet on 2nd September, clashing for the last place left in Super 4.
Sri Lanka’s chase against Bangladesh is the highest ever in the history of the T20 Asia Cup. Notably, Asia Cup 2022 is the second time the event is taking place in the 20-over format. It earlier happened for the first time in 2016 when International Cricket Council (ICC) downsized Asian Cricket Council (ACC).
It was decided that the event would take place in the T20 and ODI formats on an alternate basis depending on the version of the forthcoming World Cups to provide a practice panel.
Notably, the top two teams of the Super 4 will see each other in the Asia Cup 2022 final, scheduled for 11th September.
