Six members of Pakistan’s touring side have tested positive for COVID-19 as the Pakistan side has received a final warning from the authorities for breaching biosecurity protocols.
“It is a privilege to come to New Zealand to play sport, but in return, teams must stick to the rules that are designed to keep Covid-19 out of our communities,” said Ashley Bloomfield director-general of health in a statement.
The identity of the members has been kept confidential as it remains unclear whether players or members of support staff have tested positive for the virus.
Out of the six tests that came positive, two of the cases were historical while four were new infections according to NZC.
“While this is disappointing for the Pakistan squad, the testing outcomes and the actions taken show the government system is working,” the board added.
Bloomfield also added that some members were seen breaking the social distancing rules via CCTV footage.
“The team as a whole has been issued with a final warning, It’s important to note that all incidents of breaches occurred within the facility and there is no risk to the public.”
