Eoin Morgan bids farewell to international cricket officially

England’s Eoin Morgan has officially announced retirement from international cricket with an immediate effect. England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) wrote an article on their website, loading Morgan with praises for his contribution to England’s white-ball cricket.

The batter, seeking his suffering fitness and form, has decided to bid farewell to international cricket, paving a way for others to enjoy the team’s captaincy. Although he has positively contributed to the evolution of limited-over cricket, but lately, he has been able to score only two half-centuries in the last 28 innings.

Morgan became the first England skipper to win an ICC ODI World Cup title for the team in 2019. On completing seven years of him as the team’s skipper, he has decided to bid adieu to his post.

Notably, Morgan was named captain of the side in 2014 ahead of the ICC World Cup 2015 taking over Sir Alastair Cook. He made his international debut for Ireland and played 23 ODIs for the native team. Joining England’s Cricket Team in 2009, he has always proven himself as a vital cog.

His nightmare as a player started due to a series of injuries post the 2019 World Cup. Lately, Morgan missed the third ODI against the Netherlands due to an injury and scored two consecutive ducks in the first two games.

Moeen Ali, Morgan’s counterpart, while talking to BBC’s Test match special, already had hinted at Morgan’s retirement. He also revealed that the current white-ball deputy, Jos Buttler might be the next captain.

Talking about the retirement to ECB, Morgan stated,

“After careful deliberation and consideration, I am here to announce my retirement from international cricket with immediate effect. To call time on what has been without a doubt the most enjoyable and rewarding chapter of my career hasn’t been an easy decision, but I believe now is the right time to do so, both for me, personally, and for both England white-ball sides I have led to this point.
